The grand old Oscar is 79 years old. It is a hell lot of years, since the first academy awards were held. And considering the huge audiences that follow the academy awards, it is absolutely certain for these awards to be thrust with criticism. Most of the criticism is due to the fact that, most critics label the Oscar awards for becoming increasingly traditional in their approach.
Critics Angle:
Some critics are also of the view that, most academy awards are bestowed upon films and pictures, which have not had that much effect on the film viewers. Some films have fared badly and there was very little effect on the starting release. Also, it was observed that most of the films, which did not receive good reviews from critics, went on to be nominated for the best film of that year. It is not the first time, that critics and even actors have protested the functioning of the academy awards and the way they are conducted. In fact, some critics say, that the criticism of the academy awards started from the very year of its inception. In addition, several good quality films were seen with plenty of nominations, but they had to suffice with just one or two awards only. A film called “Citizen Kane” got tremendous and good response from the critics and audiences alike and, got the nomination for 9 Oscars. But surprise of surprises, it only managed to get a single award. This, despite being labeled as the best US made film.
Miscellaneous:
Some people are also of the view that the film actors are at a disfavor, when it comes to acting in comic scenes. It is observed that actors, who act in light hearted roles, are rarely bestowed academy awards. Except few actors such as Jack Black and Jack Nicholson, very few actors are awarded the Oscars for comic performances. It is also felt that actors are also given awards, considering their previous works rather than the nominated films. Also, many actors feel that there are increasing cases of buttonholing going on. This might be one of the reasons that good quality films are bestowed with awards.
